I love the artwork. The artist has an engaging way of depicting emotion. The period is a fascinating backdrop. Sadly, this is where I think the good things about this manga stop. The characters are vapid, weak willed simpletons who pursue material comfort and status in lieu of honest emotion. I couldn't establish a single emotional attachment to any of the characters. Sumi leaves her brothers and sisters to live with a man who mistreats her at every turn. Souichirou, the man who buys her, is motivated by money first, then that turns into love later. (read more)

I was bored when I decided to read this manga (come on when you are bored any manga would do). As it turns out however this manga kept me glued to my laptop screen for almost 5 hours!! I could not keep my eyes off of it. It is a beautifully composed tale of poverty, love and madness and somehow I feel that if this got turned into an anime it would not do the manga any justice. It's brilliant!! I cannot wait for the last chapter to come out. It officially ended at chapter 57 on March 29th in Japan, now all we have to wait on are the scanlations haha. (read more)
