While many of us would probably scream at even the thought of a ghost being near us, Freshman Nimura Kensuke just thinks of it as a common everyday thing, seeing as how he has the uncanny ability to see so many of them on a daily basis. Things soon heat up for him when he meets a girl who changes his life from then on. Her name's Kagura, and she has the power to summon a mighty "spirit devourer"--otherwise known as a "Ga-rei"--called Byakuei. So, what's Nimura to do? Chase down the evil spirits and have Kagura summon the Ga-rei to devour them, of course! Now, come feast on their adventures like some ravenous Ga-rei!

There are plenty of spirit saving stories, and this one is no different. The overall story was interesting, as many things went at a good pace from beginning to end. I found Kagura, the female protagonist, to be extremely interesting and deep (I daresay even better than Rukia Kuchiki), with understandable pain and hopes. Unfortunately, Kensuke, the male protagonist, was just annoying by the end. Sure, he lamented about being weak and wanting to become stronger like all basic protagonists, and it was obvious that he was going to get the girl, but when he is saying the same things by the third and final arc, I just wanted him to die for not going anywhere with Kagura and haunting her as an evil spirit.

Some of the supporting cast were also intriguing, especially Izuna and Shizuru, but others whom I felt were just as cool never got sufficient story arcs, such as Kouji (the bodyguard). My final complaint is about the ending, as it was too "Happily Ever After" and it felt like it went against the tone from the rest of the series about human-spirit coexistence. After all is said and done, this was still a good manga with plenty of action and a decent amount of suspense. The cast was well-rounded with personalities I both loved and hated. I recommend this manga to those who like Bleach, and want a quick read to tie them over.
