Summary:
There is a Gothic-style mansion in a distant, rarely-visited part of Japan. There, the world's greatest surgeon, Naomitsu Madaraki, once lived. But he hasn't come home in ages.

Instead, the professor's "daughter", Fran Madaraki, lives there with a large amount of her own ghoulish creations and her "younger sister" Veronica. She's a very unusual girl, what with the stitch patterns on her face and the giant bolts on either side of her head. Just as skilled at surgery as her father, and if you're willing to pay her price, she can do everything up to and including raising the dead.

Fran believes that a life should be saved no matter the cost, and keep that in mind, since the results of her surgeries are rarely (if ever) pretty.

Franken Fran... oh, I adore this manga. When I look at it, it reminds me a lot of Petshop of Horrors. The basic idea is that you observe the story of Fran, the creation of a great scientist, Dr. Naomitsu Madaraki. The chapters basically detail on little adventures that Fran performs, meeting people who are needing her assistance, and a few unfortunate souls who end up in a terrible predicament and happen upon her. For these people, they don't always have a happy ending after she finishes with them, some die, others find themselves in a worse fate than that. Ultimately, it fulfills the need of keeping someone entertained. Some of these stories can be predictable, but others do have happy endings, and a few might even touch your heart. It is able to make fun of some subject topics, and it delivers in the gore factor.

Yes... I should probably add that little bit in... it is extremely gory... So it's not for the squeamish. It can deal with heavy topics, and it is a very violent book at certain times. Violence isn't the main theme, it's nothing like certain others in the sennin genre. You won't be seeing Fran go all Kung-Fu and beat the shit out of some unfortunate guy. However, her minions and certain figures in the manga will be eviscerating, devouring, or otherwise murdering either humans, or other beings. It does deal in animal death, but I assure you that it isn't the main theme, nor is it something that is done in a cruel fashion like a certain other sennin manga that is just as gory.

Ultimately, I can say this... If you aren't easily offended by blood, gore, or squeamish towards certain topics... then this is the manga for you. I'd suggest you read Petshop of Horrors first just to see if you will be interested in this. It's not as gory, but certain themes parallel this one. It is a manga that doesn't disappoint. You will find yourself reading this from chapter to chapter and wanting more. If you are very squeamish, and things like horror disturb you... then you should probably look for something less graphic in the sennin genre.
