Sakurakouji Sakura is a girl who appears modest and graceful but in reality is skilled in martial arts. After witnessing a boy burning people with his blue flame, she is startled to see that the same boy is a transfer student, Oogami Rei. Oogami is a Code Breaker, one who "does not exist". He is a seemingly cold-blooded killer who follows the principle of "an eye for an eye", to "use evil against evil". Convinced that killing is not right, Sakurakouji sets out to stop him and penetrate his icy heart.

The first 70 or so chapters of the Code Breaker was quite good. It started out slightly cliche but we discover later that the story and characters had some depth. There were also mysteries that compelled readers to read more. The art is good; however, most of it is a profile position of the characters' faces, which seem to be the author's area of strength. But the art made each character look distinct and for the most part, recognizable. In addition, each had a distinct personality and background.

However, after those initial chapters, the story took a downhill. It feels almost as if the author just gave up or never really had anything planned out. It pulled off a Bleach by creating plot twists that made no sense whatsoever, and these twists occur out of nowhere. The story progression simply lacks sophisticated depth... it was interesting when some members of the code breakers broke away but after that everything became so melodramatic and cliche. Superficial nature of a story can often be determined by not just the story itself but also the dialogue. The dialogue of Code Breaker is really quite poor, especially later on. How often does Rei and Sakurakoji have the basic same conversations? My answer: a million times.

Perhaps the author is already well aware that the quality of his story is going down. In fact, many authors are aware of this; it is not necessarily their fault due to unknowable circumstances personally and financially. It's a shame because this was a story that could have had great philosophical depth and drama.

TLDR; It had the potential to be a good manga but it failed for reasons unknown. You may have a great experience with it at first but it's not worth it because in the end, that experience will shatter. Best not to pick it up in the first place.
